I recently installed Dension 500 in my car and took my car to the dealership for coding today. My i-drive software was recently updated about four months ago, so i figured I will have at most a hour to two programing. However, the dealer has been working on my car coding issue for four hours and going on to five hours. Is this normal. No I'm way out of warranty so I paying for this out of pocket. I was very curious if this is normal?

Its hard to say as the electronic in E60 can be flaky. The programming can crap out during the update process, if this happens, then the process has to start over. GL

Even though you may have been sitting in the waiting area for 5 hours, even if your car has been in a techs stall that entire time, I seriously doubt it has been getting "worked on" the entire time.

Those guys will work on other cars and even leave your car sitting there while they go to lunch... Just how it works in dealerships, no matter what the brand.

Should agree upfront a capped labour rate, as most of the time it is just plugged receiving the update.

I agreed a 2 hour rate from the main dealer, but then found a specialist who did it for under half that cost.

Update: Just got back from the dealer and they charged me for 4.5 hours of program and still were not able to make it my dension 500 unit work. What a freaking rip-off. And to add insult to injury they would not accept a coupon that they sent me for 20% of any service or part. They stated they would of told me up-front that they couldn't do it since it's a aftermarket part, but s/a was new and was not aware. Yet they still fooled around with it all day to make money when they knew they couldn't do it. 550.00 for nothing. So I'm going try one last thing. Any suggestions?

They usually only charge you about an hour of labor for re-programing for mp3 coding...

Wow??? No wonder some people call them "stealers." I would try a good indy shop. They have lists of them on your local chapter of the BMW club web site. G/L
