Our cars run hot - especially the inline sixes! Unless you hear some kind of ticking/light knocking from your engine compartment, I'd not worry about it. The oil smell could have easily been from a number of things, but to be sure, open your hood WHEN THE ENGINE IS COLD (and off, naturally) and inspect thoroughly for any leaks.
BTW if you're going to remove the plastic engine cover in the process, make sure you have a few of those aluminum bolts, bc you cannot just re-tighten these - once you release them, they have to be replaced with new ones - otherwise, some corrosion might occur - and you don't want that on the engine... anyway, just don't worry too much, make sure your engine is not leaking oil anywhere and you should be just fine.
Also, check the hoses and tubes - particularly, those dealing with the cooling system - they are notoriously sensitive to colder weather and might leak resulting in some hot fluid/fumes escaping and causing the steam/smoke you saw.
