E60 sales in June were off 24% from the same month last year. Year-to-date E60 sales are 3% below last year - and that is the best performance of any BMW brand model.

To make matters worse, MB E-Class sales were up 18% in June and outsold the E60 for the second month in a row.

At the half-way mark for 2008, vehicle sales are in the tank, down 10% from last year.

But even still, there are winners and loosers. Anything small is selling well: compact cars, cross-overs, and SUVs are up slightly (+2%). Midsize vehicles (cars, SUVs, pickpups) are down 9%. And everything large is just sitting on the dealer's lot (-26%).

What's Hot
  • MINI is the hottest brand in the U.S. with year-to-date sales up 34%. Next best: Scion sales are up 8% and Honda sales are up 7%.
  • Your basic compact car is selling like hot cakes with sales in this segment up 39% YTD. The Honda Fit is up an astounding 67% while the Toyota Yaris is up 39%. I guess price signals work.
  • Some conventional midsize cars are doing well too. The Chevy Malibu is up 31%, and the benchmark Honda Accord is up 13%.
  • The Audi TT is on a roll, up 53% YTD over last year.
  • The Mercedes Benz C-Class is up 37% (while the 3 series is down 18%)
  • And the Cadillac CTS is up 24%.
What's Not
  • Just about everything else is toast. Large pickup trucks (F-Series, Silerado) have taken the biggest hit (down 45% as a segment), and large luxury sedans (Lexus LS, MB S-Class, BMW 7er) have sunk deep too (-36%).
  • Hummer brand sales are down 40%.
  • Saab sales have dipped 29%.
  • Chrysler also is down 29%.
  • Land Rover sales have hit the rocks (-28% as a brand), with LR3 sales tumbling 61% so far this year.
  • Porsche 911 sales are down 34%.
  • Prius sales are down 25% in June compared to last year. I'm guessing consumers find the basic compact car to be a better deal than a premium-priced hybrid.

Great info as always, tachyon. One reason that Porsche 911 sales are down (other than the economy being in the crapper, of course) is that the facelift model just got released. It will hit the US showrooms in September so a lot of buyers are holding out for the revised version. It's a pretty major revision this around, the updated 997 has new DFI engines and a new double clutch transmission amongst other changes.

And I guess that the X6 is eating out some of the X5 sales, while the new 7-series is waiting to be released.

I was told by my dealership recently when I was looking for the next car to lease (528i) that the 1 series is backorder because of high sales. I guess from the chart, I see why. I'm not surprised that the LCI E60 isn't selling as much since I still think the older ones look better. There just wasn't enough improvement in the E60 I believe to please the crowd like the E90 did for the 3 series. But I still went with the upgrade from 3 to the 5.

It looks like the 5 is doing well for the year, given the economy. Its down for the month since last June was the early months of the LCI. The 6 is hurt worse by the economy. My guess is the 1, the C class and the CLS have all taken 3 series sales. The 7 is down from folks waiting for the '09. The X6 has taken away from the X5. The big X3 drop is surprising but I guess there are a lot of decent well equipped compact SUVs (Mazda CL-7, Infinity EX, Nissan Roque, Acura RSX, etc).
