First image post, so I apologize in advance if this takes some troubleshooting to get right...
Someone has probably already done this, but my curiosity was killing me so I did a little photoshopping to swap the F10 and E60. I was pretty sure the E60 would feel more modern if treated like the F10 was in the original line-up shot. I'm thinking one would be hard-pressed to claim it doesn't look like a more natural progression than the original image, no?
I should add that if you have ordered, purchased, or plan to get the F10, you won't go wrong, it's not my intent to tear-it down. That said, I do think the F10 design is a somewhat disappointing, missed opportunity for BMW?overall a sad move backwards from an innovation standpoint. On the bright side, it expedited my decision to get another E60 vs. waiting for the F10.
As a designer myself, I definitely have a strong opinion about it but I'm out of time to elaborate. I thought I'd at least get this up here to illustrate that the E60 has many years of freshness left!

I actually started the edits with an LCI version... I can't remember how far I took it, so I'll have to check tonight. I also started putting an M5 in there, but it's not head-on (couldn't find an optimal shot that wouldn't take major retouching) ? and I had to leave at least a little time to add the "meh" plate!
I think exactly the opposite,
that the E60 is beginning to feel and look like a car designed in 2004. Whereas the F10 is thoroughly modern from all aspects.
I think once folks drive the F10 and see how far the dynamics have moved on from the E60 it will change some minds.
So will seeing more of them on the road with better paint, wheel, choices and the M Sport in September.
That?s the time to really judge the E60 and I think that debate is gonna be ugly, given the E60's ability to polarize opinion.

Granted I have not been a BMW owner as long some other here have been but I would like to add that I too find the E60 to be more modern and aggresive in its looks. Whatever I have seen about F10 yet doesnt cut the bar I had in mind about the next 5-series form factor. Perhaps as suggested, I will begin to like the F10 as I see more of them around..
Before E60 I was in the Acura/Infinti crowd and it was E60's looks and performance that made me buy my first BMW. It looked modern from all angles and stood out every time I saw it. F10, not so sure....

I personally thought the E60 was great looking and innovative when it first came to market. However I see your point as a lot of my friends thought it was ugly. When I told them I bought an E60 they gave me a look and said... "why?!". Then I showed them in person and they said... "wowwwww!".
All in all I don't like the direction BMW is heading. Their designs look frumpy and conservatively outdated and they try to make up for it with sharper lines. This is especially apparent with the M models. The E30 -> E36 -> E46 -> E90/E92, every new model becoming more conservative and less of a true driver's car. How do they make up for that? Add more HP of course, because that's what the every day driver cares about. The F10 has a "durrrr/duhhhh" look while the E60 looks like it just beat the F10 with a stick. Probably why the F10 doesn't look as good, the E60 scared it
.
