intermittent PDC failure

been getting an intermittent PDC failure. it works for a couple of seconds then light up as failure, sometimes working immediately only to fail again. sometimes it works sometimes it never works. anyone had similar issues? thanks in advance...

Yep. There's a damaged or bad sensor in one of the bumpers. Or, less likely, the wiring is corroded at one of the connectors.

Turn on PDC and then put your ear up to each sensor on the bumpers and listen for a *tick* *tick* *tick* sound. Whichever sensor(s) are not making the sound are broken.

thanks man, they really do tick and i've spotted the dead one easy. is it an easy job to replace? indy shop or stealers? cheers

Depending on your level of skill replacing a PDC sensor could be a DIY. The replacement must be pre-painted in the color of your car.

thanks luigi, over here we can order sensors already painted. do they come off from the front or does the bumper need to come off? if they come off from the from it should be a 5min job which would be beautiful. cheers

The bumper must be removed - the PDC sensors attach from the rear. Taking the bumper off is easier than you think. It's a few screws and two clips. Lay the bumper on a large blanket when you remove it.

thank you all.

just back from my indy garage, the guy who owns it is a personal friend i've known for 20 years. they confirmed the dud sensor but get this, they replace it with a volvo item that is identical to the bmw part. cost £17. unpainted but i know a good paintshop. it's ordered and i should get it next week. nice surprise.

Just make sure the paintshop you use knows how to paint these things. Too much spray over the sensor and they won't work.
