that sucks..
i have noticed on both of my e60's that the switch gear has a soft plastic/membrane covering and have always been careful to touch/clean lightly. happily, both of mine are fine.
it is easy to see that if you did not treat these parts with some level of care, that they will wear badly.....

Here some pictures for reference...
I'm usually careful with this, I hardly even use the volume knob, I use the steering wheel...I bought the car with this wear...I want to replace the pass window switch for sure if it's only $45, my driver side switch is ok, but I do have issues with the door handles, not the actual handle to open the door, but the "grab" handle... see pics...
