Comparing the US and the GB facelift enigne data brings out this:

The new DI R6's 523i, 525i and 530i -engines for EU markets are code N53.

The 528i for the US market only is a code N52 engine!
This must mean that the 3-litre 528i engine is not a direct injected one?

The 535i is a N54 and the V8's are N62.

All this is true... I'll quote myself from another thread as you may find it interesting

"The new 530i uses a totally new engine design based around high precision direct injection and lean burn mode. It's called the N53 and the E60 facelift is the first car to get this engine. It has fairly incredible fuel economy and emission figures for a petrol car (no to far away from a diesel).

The lean burn engine has catalytic converters which operate at very high temperatures and as such they are very sensitive to sulphur levels in petrol. EU regulations were put in place to bring the level of sulphur in fuel down but that only happened in the last few years. Not all countries have suitable fuel so may not get the DI engine. Could it be possible that the US is one of these countries?

Before you ask... yes, the 535i also has a direct injection engine (N54) but the design is quite different. Although this engine runs fairly lean, it doesn't run in the very economical lean-burn mode of the N53. One of the reasons is extra heat generated in lean burn mode is not very compatible with the turbos. So with the 535i because, it doesn't even try to run in lean burn mode, the sulphur level of the fuel is less of an issue and thus it might be more suitable candidate for the US market.

Don't shoot me if I'm wrong about US sulphur levels. Maybe things have improved since I read about this on the E90 forums.
I would be interested in learning more about this subject so engine experts, please chime in..."

N52 engine? So is it basically a detuned 3.0L from the current 530i?
