How about the idea of an umbrella policy to cover the liability area from say $300K to $2M? I have this from USAA but don't believe the UM and UIM is affected by this coverage. The umbrella seems to be a pretty cheap way to get a large liability coverage limit.
Asset protection is 50% of the reason to get insurance. Self protection is the other, which is where the UIM coverage comes into play.
