I'm newbie here
and therefore got a question regarding the
confort glass or infrared laminated glass

I order last week a E61 525d and took the
confort glazing just for the sake of protective
and security but I couldnt found any picture
or real explanation from the dealer in Brussel
so was hoping that someone may have such
info for me

cheers

AFAIK,
the comfort glass is protecting the interior from the infrared light, so that the interior is not getting to warm. Infrared light gets reflected
The sun protection glass is tinted and blocks the sun completely out, so it's getting darker in the inside of the car.
The protective glass is double as thick as the other windows and almost "unbrakeable". It makes the car more quiet.

Iceman,

well all that I know, but what I would like to know is how
does it look on the car - guess it should be slightly greener
than "standard" - so if someone have a picture with this
option on his car, a picture would be great

Sorry...
I don't think the infrared protetion is visible. I'm pretty sure it is not greener or darker!

We had the double glazing/comfort glass windows on our previous 5er. It looked no different from the normal glass. However, a black strip was visible on top of the window whenever you'd roll it down. There also seemed to be a more extensive, interior use of rubber between the door and the glass. This rubber constantly made squeaking noises during the winter.. it was never annoying enough to apply som silicone though.

Is it really "unbreakable"? I doubt it - nothing a sledgehammer couldn't fix

The former 5er was also more noisy than our current (odd considering the double windows, 16" wheels and regular suspension on the last 5er, versus the single glazing, 18" wheels and sports suspension on the current). I guess they have really improved on sound proofing of the E60. As you may see on the pic, there's not really any tint to the glass, except the tint you'd find on any other regular carglass.

The infrared protective glass is NOT the "protective" glass, it is just a "infrared protective" glass.
And the "protective glass is double as thick and ALMOST unbrakeable. You coudn't brake it with one of those little red emergency hammers you find on busses.

And the tint is only available on the "sun protection" glass, what keeps the sunlight out. Infrared protective glass doesn't keep the sunlight out, just the infrared light, he heat.

Paasan, Iceman

Thanks a bunch for all the information, and cool picture.

I cant wait my e61 which is programm for middle Oct.

As you may not know in Belgium due to heavy taxation
we have the option to take either 163 or 177 hp. I choice
for the 163cv (unfortunately) - If I had choice the 177hp
I would have to pay Euro 2700 once on top the annual road
tax which is about Euro 750 /yearly and that also why I
couldnt go to the real world in diesel the 3.0d (taxation is
more than Euro 4900 plus road tax yearly Euro 1000
(moneymoneymoney...) and all that the drive at maximum
legal of 120km/H anyway

Have you any idea how BMW took to power from 177 to 163 down ?
Since after I got my registration I will do all I can to have
the original 177cv back on the wheels and maybe more
if possible...

thanks
Andr?

I think this will be a ecu question. AC Schnitzer has a tuningchip option that will raise the power above 200 hp. Check www.acschnitzer.de.

I did not know that diesels are so heavily taxed in Belgium. My dad is so happy he lives there it saves him 30% off a new care in comparison to the Netherlands.
My dad lives in Melle near Gent and my wifes parents have a second house in Oostduinkerke.

I just saw on the site of acschnitzer that they only offer tuning for the 3.0d but I have seen offers voor de 525. They have a nice exhaust for the touring on the site hehehe.. If your into bodykits they have one especially for your E61 too (not even for the E60 )

Hi 530E60NL

Regarding the chip tuning my concerns are more to know
if I have to go from the Belgian 166 cv to the original 177cv
BEFORE putting the chiptuning

schnitzer yeah - they have a lot of stuff, somewhat pricey
but I'm not into such tuning game -

by the way how is the engine - is 177cv enough ? I drive
twice a E61 before I order it, and having right now a e46
2.0D 150cv found the engine of the e61 having far more
"drehmoment"
