I think they opted for a less gee-whiz approach - and from the sound it things, after finding out the hard way that these systems aren't very robust. The use of runflats (which seem to be enjoying widespread adoption in BMW's lineup) is easily as effective a safety measure if not more effective for drivers who couldn't be bothered checking their tire pressures.
Sometimes simple, elegant solutions trump bleeding edge technology. Someone will figure out how to make these PSI systems more robust, but until then I think BMW probably isn't the only reluctant implementor. I can only imagine the bitching we're in for... the endless threads about sensors giving out, etc...
