I think the stars really aligned for you - esp. that second call discounting the M5 even further. That was excellent timing.

360 in US, 370 here . 370 are strict relative of 400, not of 350 .
Remap it and you will be closer to 400 HP .
About the weight, there are 100 kg at least .
Jet, the M5 is faster, ok ... But not so faster to spend 3x in maintance and 1.6x petrol to go, every day, in the same way . Or even slower than the 550i, at lows .

Do you guys not have the 4yr/50,000 warranty/maintenance?

My friend has an e39 M5, however I prefer my e60 545i sport 6mt for how mild mannered it is - yet almost as fast when I need it.
Lower maint costs and 29.6mph on the HWY are amazing also!!!

Handling, I have to give to the 550i. The ARS works miracles and allows a comfy ride yet keeps the car flat and nearly neutral in hard turns.
How does it compare on track? With 34hp less and an auto tranny, my bone stock, Conti tired 550i had equal lap times at VIR full course compared to taking the E39 M5 there with Koni shocks, track pads, and R compound tires. And that is with 5mph less speed on the straights in the 550i. A few years more track experience may have helped the 550i but it was only my 2nd time at VIR anyways. That being said, my time in the 550i is 10-15 secs a lap slower than an expert in an E60 M5.
I can't directly compare the 550i to the E60 M5, only having riden in one once (driven by a BMW instructor at Spartanburg). It certainly was faster when pushed, seemed to handle quite well, but I doubt one could use the extra power on a daily basis. I'd like the full leather interior and alcantara headliner of the M5 but can't say I'd pay $3800 to add it to the 550i.

Interesting thread. As an M5 owner, when I see a 550i (or any other non-M 5 Series) I don't think there goes a car like mine. I regard the M5 as in a completely different class to the "standard" 5's. Different engine, gearbox, steering, seats, trim level, wheel/tyre size, diff, suspension, etc etc. The 5 series is the donor car for the body and that's about it.
No disrespect to 5xxi owners, as I'm sure the base 5's are great cars, but they just can't be compared with the M5 which is in a category of its own. Even when the M5 is compared to the E63 or S6, the road testers usually acknowledge that the M5 is a much further developed derivative of the standard 5 series than the AMG etc is of their base model.
I suspect very few M5 owners would have considered a 550i as an alternative choice when chosing their new car - the thought never crossed my mind that's for sure.
