I think you can buy an extended warranty through BMW up until the factory warranty expires.
After that, you might be able to get one through a third party, I imagine...

How did you get the extended warranty? Did the dealer offer this during the purchase?
Typical price varies from $1,500 to $4,000 for an additional 3 years/50k. Prices vary because (1) dealers are stealers and (2) things like deductible, etc.

My Ride: 2008 535i: June 6th start build, complete June 17th, at NY Port July 5th, at dealer July 10th, took delivery Friday July 13- Plantimum Bronze/Natural Brown Leather/Light Poplar, Sport Package, Sport Auto, Active Steering, Premium Package, CWP & PDC. Dinan Performance Software 384hp & 421 ft/lbs.
I absolutely, positively wanted the SMG. I intended to always shift it manually. It has compromises and some problems including some non-intrinsic issues like valet parking. If you don't feel the same way about "having to have it", its not for you. Its that simple!

Dont know what to tell ya. I'm scared myself too but SMG is fun! Just get it and get the extended warranty and then worry about it later. Its too early for me to tell what the reliability is for SMG but so far so good.
Ehh... well besides a little hickup right now with it shuddering when starting off the line... we'll see how big the problem really is... appoitment booked in for Monday.

This is a good point, how do you SMG drivers deal with valet drivers and car washes? Avoiding them all together is not an option for me.

My Ride: 2006 550i SMG
Id have to say after putting on 4k miles I'm quite impressed with my smg. The shifting is pretty smooth, even in standard mode and I drive all the time in auto mode...makes talking on cell phone 100 times easier (one day I'll spend time figuring out my bluetooth ) The 550i E60 SMG is a great combo. The only other experience I had with SMG was on a 330i I test drove and almost had me convinced to never get it. I havent had a chance to drive an M car with it...even there paddles are different?
I say go for SMG

I've had my SMG transmission replaced once (a major pain in the butt) and I would
1. Definitely buy another BMW with SMG
and
2. Never even consider letting that thing get off warranty.
