First off - I'm one of the mind that if you haven't at least turned a page in the owner's manual don't expect me to do that for you ... but I did invest at least 15 minutes searching the manual on pdf w/o finding an answer for this one

Here's the deal - I jumped into the car to run a quick errand ... closed the door and pushed the start (I have comfort access) button and all I got was this error message. No clicking - no engine turning over ... all quiet as a tomb.

Hmmmmm ... I thought for a second - took a phone pic for posterity and sharing ... then opened and closed the door again ... pushed the start button and off and I'm running as usual.

The only possible thing I could think of was I didn't remember (because it's so darn automatic in my brain) had I stepped on the brake the first go round? Don't know and may that when I get out tonight.

But, I won't have time to search thru my owner's manual again until later tonight ... so, has anyone seen or can tell me what this error message is for? And if I find it later before someone jumps in with a clue I'll mark this one as "answered"!

Hmmm a steering wheel and a lock..hhhmmmmm..lol. Never seen that before. Usually you get that when Active Steering give you an issue. But the lock? and no start? Was you steering wheel locked? Did you try to wiggle the steering wheel while hitting the brake and pushing start?

I would have said steering lock failure. Time for a diagnostic from the service centre is needed me thinks.

Have you checked the check control messages in the "I" menu?.

That's what i thought. It's the same thing if you have a key. you have to wiggle the wheel to get the key to turnover. We would only see this thing on a comfort access car I assume since the dash on non-comfort access cars will not light up until the key has been turned....and the key cannot turn without wiggling the wheel. That's what I had figured.

It's likely battery thing. Shortly after I replaced battery (with different capacity one) without registering it, I got this error. I then registered battery. It never happened again.

The TIS helps ... funny thing is when my original battery died three years ago I got lots of alerts but that wasn't one of them.

I don't think I actually touched the steering wheel when I tried to start the car this first time the alert appeared. And all I did was open the door and shut it pushed start again (I have CA) and the car started immediately.

There were none after that once ... and were none after 6-8 subsequent starts tonight while driving from store to store for shopping. I guess these gremlins can pop up - never to be heard from again ... until the next time!

That's why warranty coverage is soooooo important on BMWs! If I get a recurrance during the next few weeks I'll bring my picture log and let the dealer sort it out.
