That's the right approach in diagnosis and confirmation of the root cause before replacing parts. Buy your friend a beer.

Do you think this is a good idea for preventative/upcoming 100k maintenance? Also do these coils fit a 550? I'm asking because Amazon says they do not fit (I know fitment guides aren't always correct) and I want to make sure they do before I buy.

Is this the plug you guys were referring to? NGK (6441) ZFR6FIX-11 Iridium IX Spark Plug, Pack of 1 : Amazon.com : Automotive

Thanks in advance.

I am sure more experienced members can chime in on alternate methods.

Plowery and Trinity - thanks for the feedback!
No prob Bimmer!..because I had to go back in for a bad plug, the service papers says they diagnosed the issue the same way as your friend..found a bad result cylinder, switched coils, and in my case had the same result for the same cylinder...therefore the plug was bad not the coil...FYI

Would be nice to have a BMW certified tech as a Friend

Yes I would recommend changing your plugs on the 550i. The part number is ZFR6FIX-11 OR Stock# 6441.
