My choice would be the 530i.

Why what about the mpg. V8 is more noisy and not as smooth as inline six. If I want a noisy V8 I would get corvette. I think BMW is unique because its inline six can provide smooth and soundless acceleration.
I've had two BMW 5 Series V8s and I do not believe that they are noisy. To me, there's smooth. I rent the Corvette ZHZ from Hertz when I travel to LA and Dallas and I there is simply no comparing the reinfement of a BMW V8 with a Corvette V8. The BMW V8 is silky smooth. The Vette's is a blunt intrument -- brutally powerful and noisy and lacking any refinement whatsoever.
I do agree that BMW's Inline Sixes are wonderful, smooth engines but I cannot agree with your assessment that BMW V8s are noisy and not smooth. They sound like a refined V8 -- powerful and strong, but never crude.
BMW V8's rock.

Which would you pick? The 530i is automatic M-Sport, the 525i is a manual with Sport and Prem. Both '06.

I really don't think that MPG is a major motivator for BMW purchasers. People buy BMWs for performance and not MPG.

Your car is too new. Wait for a couple of years. The latest BMW V8 engines do not last long.

My Ride: 2008 535i Monaco blue/cream beige, light poplar trim, sport, nav, premium, Logic 7, 6 speed manual
My other rides:
Departed: 2006 530xi Silver gray/black, anthracite maple trim, cold, sport, nav, premium, Logic 7, 6 speed steptronic, bluetooth, adaptive xenons
Departed...2002 525i White/beige, 5 sp manual
Actually, I think either one would be a great car for different reasons. I had a 525 manual (02, so even less HP than the 06 I think) and now have an o6 530 with steptronic. The 525 was quick and light...you really felt the push behind you when you dropped it down a gear, even though it wasn't really a powerful car. It could be quite exhilerating to drive. The 530 is really a thoroughbred..smooth and quiet...the power that is there is more subtle unless you really push for it.
I have to ask, why the focus on the push start? I would think about the percentage of time I spend starting my car vs. the percentage of time I spend driving the car...and go for the driving experience. IMHO...
Either way, good luck with your decision! You really can't go too wrong with a 5 series..

As to the answer to the question asked...I would find what I really wanted...manual or auto, color combo, etc. and buy that. I wouldn't spend >$25K on a car,and "settle" for much of anything
