I don't know why the reviews for the Idrive were so poor. I like the Idrive! It's just like using a mouse in my opinion. The reviewers must be lame with technology. I am totally happy with the ability to access pretty much everything from one location.
We bought a Toyota Sienna for our family car and their navigation system sucks. The graphics are poor, it is less user friendly, it locks you out when you are driving. |

I don't mind the i-drive, but I can see why some people do not like it. In fact, I've been in a friend's new STS and another's new GS430, and both of those vehicles make use of DVD/NAV touchscreens, which were a little niftier to use than i-drive. Having seen those, I would prefer the BMW to have the touchscreen rather than the i-drive, but it's not a big deal one way or another to me.

My dad is 73, not pc literate at all, and he uses i-drive no problem in his 7 series and it has a much more complex version than the 5. |

I think the iDrive is great as well. Frankly, I wish it was even more customizable...I like messing with, personalizing settings...big big fan. And "supposed older purist" driver theory is spot on. Lots of writers will only like the E39 until they are beaten into submission. These are the same folks whose VCR blinks 12:00.
