Can someone explain to me how the Service computer is supposed to work?

From the first day I got my 545i, every time I started my car the info display in the instrument cluster would briefly display the number: "14,000 mls"

Clearly this number is an indication for the oil change.

My question is.... is this number supposed to change over time?

I ask because my car ALWAYS displays 14,000 mls.... even when my car reached 15,000 miles and the oil service still said OK.

To this day, my car still says 14,000 mls.... for the Oil service.

I've had my oil changed by the dealer, and I mentioned to them I think my service computer is not functioning properly... but after a software update, it seems I still have the same problem.

Or do I?

Yes it's supposed to go down over time. Mine had the same problem, but a software update fixed it. It appears to go down in increments of 1,000 until it gets below 5,000, then smaller increments like 100 - others please confirm.

Alright people.... lets just make this easier.

I took my car in for oil change at 15,000 miles. The car still said I had 14,000 miles until I needed the oil change.

Now that my oil has been changed.... when should I take it back for another service?

I don't need a computer to tell me when, as long as I know.

So after 15,000 miles... what should be next?

Thanks.

The mileage shown on start up didn't change on my car (always showed 15,000) until they upgraded the CIP to 17.01--now it does go down as more miles accumulate.

You may not need a computer to tell you when you need an oil change, but I'm pretty sure that the system is used by BMW to decide when they will give you a FREE oil change as part of your free scheduled maintenance.

Yes, this is exactly how it should work.
In Europe the kilometers start from 25,000 and then go down by the thousands and after 1,000 they go down by the hundreds until it goes under 100 km.
After this it goes down by 10 and you'll have a warning light burning in the tacometer area.

After the car is served they should reset the service computer.
But not all the service areas. If you only have the smaller service they should not reset the area for changing brake pads, brakefuel or coolant liquids.

I served my old E60 when I only had 70 km to go.

Well.... I got a software update.... but I feel that my computer is still off badly, because nothing was moving down while I drove the first 15,000 miles.

for example, the car still says 22,000 miles until Vehicle check
and it says 33,000 miles until front brake pads

So... what has now happened is, my car service computer was not functioning when I first got the car... and I drove 15,000 miles. I then got an oil change and a software update. so, even if my service computer is now working, then numbers are all off by 15,000 miles. There is no way I'm going to get 48,000 miles out of my front brake pads....

Mine goes down with time, and displays the lowest value in the 'service menu'. For example, I had my oil changed at 11,000k when it said 100 miles or so on the display. Now , it says 7k for my brakes, and 11k for oil. The value I see when I turn on my car is the lower 7K number.
