Hi y'all...

I guess my question is pretty much in the title of this thread...
I have permanently music in my car (radio/CD), and every time I ask the nav system for a new direction, the vocal instructions cut my radio/music off for instructions I generally dont need, as I can look at the screen when I need it, which is not very often.

So every time I have to go to the top menu, select iDrive, then language, then deselect Voice.
It takes a little time and sometimes gets on my nerves

So I'm looking for a way to set the vocal instructions to "no" by default, instead of the "yes"...

Another twist might be to use one of the two programmable buttons on the steering wheel, but I cant find this options (I can find the options for those buttons, but vocal instructions is not listed).

I have a 520i, produced april 2004, with business navigation (DVD 2004-1 for Europe), first delivered in France 04/2004. I got it a month ago (and I LOVE it !!!)

Thanks very much in advance !!!

PS : I searched very much the forums before asking.
I found the page about iDrive menus hierarchy but it doesnt help

Yes, in the nav screen you have the option of turning off the voice directions. If I am not mistaken, when you have the Map up on the main screen (big map on the left) there is a row of Icons on the far left. There should be a picture of a speaker, if you move the redbox around that and push down the Idrive controller, it will turn off the voice telling you when to turn.

Good luck

Thanks a lot, MRV, but this wont work : I have the business navigation, not the professionnal.
So no split screen, no maps. Just the arrow and directions, and I dont have the options you are talking (writing) about.

As I wrote, I have the possibility to cut these vocal messages, but it just takes a long time and about 15 moves/clicks on the idrive button, so I'm looking for a shortcut if any, or an option to put the messages off permanently, as they are back every time I cut the engine and start again.

Thanks a lot anyway for taking the time to reply, and sorry if I wasnt clear enough in my request.

Adjust volume control when the satnav is actually talking and that should do it.

There is a tickbox in the vehicle settings area on your iDrive, on mine it is under LANGUAGES - remove the tick and you will not get any voice output from the nav.

Thanks zimguy!
Actually this is how I put the voice out.
My problem is that every time I start another navigation ("new destination"), the voice is back again...
I was just looking for a way to set the voice off by default.
It is on by default, and starts to talk again each time...

Oh well, never mind, I can live with it, and thanks everybody for your help !

Glimmerchef, this is strange. Turning off the voice in the settings menu should disable the voice default all the time. You should get this checked out by your dealer.

If you use the speaker icon on the navigation screen this will mute the voice for only that navigation session/route
