If you are uncertain, wait for the sensors to do their job.
The iDrive works out brake wear using trick electronic maths.
The sensor is good old fashioned technology - when it hits the disc (rotor), then your iDrive will "BONG" and your mileage to go will become a negative number.
Rotors don't need to be changed at the same time as the pads, unless they are worn thin (which mine was after 45000 miles), badly scored or warped.

i do not have extended maint, so it's either no brake job or brake job in 2-3k miles

i am undecided on what to do

was quoted $816 for all new pads, rotors, and install
Now that is some cheap stuff. I am looking for a third car and was talked out of buying an E90 because "Brakes and Rotors cost $800 each". I was like  and now have my mind set for a TSX.

I agree with AlwynMike. Let the sensors do their job. They should be replaced with each brake job anyway.
My iDrive used to say 50,000km on fronts and 60,000km on rears. After my high speed accident and 360 degree spin with brakes on to the floor, the iDrive now says the same for fronts but only 50,000km on rears. Quickest 10,000km I ever braked. Even ABS and DTC systems were overwhelmed and shut down completely.
