Default iDrive Failing, Swap to CIC?

The iDrive in my 2006 530 wagon seems to on its way out, but I need some help diagnosing where the problem might be.

Symptoms:
Screen goes blank.
Sometimes remains on ‘BMW’ logo even after car is off & locked.
Software brightness control has no effect.

However, even with the screen blank the other functions work (audio, voice control..) Is this a condition of the main unit failing?

If so, is the best repair route to swap it out for the newer CIC system?

If so, can I install a European-spec CIC in an US-spec car for additional languages? I would like to have German, which the default US spec system doesn’t offer (or didn’t with the original CCC system).

Thank you!

Thank you. Interesting, I didn't know about that option.
