I own a 2008 528i and 2007 550i. The 528i iDrive is much more precise feeling...turns and pushes in with better feel and accuracy. The 2007 is mushier feeling and sometimes takes multiple pushes to select.

Does my 2007 need some service or is this normal between these two years? Did they improve the iDrive controller in 2008+?

thx

Pre-LCI (<March 2007) has different hardware and software for i-drive. As of March 2007, the controller has improved as well as the screen (at least for the 6.5" display). The differences are very clear, although the user interface did not change drastically. It feels like windows 3.11 versus windows 98.

In 2008 another change took place: The i-drive controller got the additional buttons for direct access of the 4 main categories. It looks like the completely new i-drive of the 3- and 7-series, but it isn't. It's only a new controller with the 2007 style i-drive.

Now the 1280-resolution i-drive of the F01... that's really a huge step forward. Unfortunately not available for the E60 and I doubt if it will be introduced before the F10 comes out.

If I'm not mistaken, the 2010 models are already available for order. They have the new screens and iDrive software AFAIK.
