Since my car is a February 2004 build, I don't have the right TCU to have Bluetooth capability. This may sound unethical, but I'm looking for a reason or complaint that would justify a TCU replacement covered by warranty. Anyone have any good ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

My car is also a Feb 04 build. I had the car at the dealer where they tried to replace the TCU but found the wiring in the car did not support the bluetooth enabled unit. Among other things there was no antenna and some of the harness was different.
I ended up installing the BTUM (Bluetooth Upgrade Module) and have been quite satisfied with the operation. I think everything works as it would with a changed TCU.
Good luck!

I don't think anyone has come up with an excuse for a TCU replacement -- often times the earlier units crashed on their own during software upgrades warranting a replacement without any need to come up with a story.
I agree that the BTUM route is probably the easiest way to get BT in the earlier cars. It isn't free but it's way cheaper than a new TCU and it doesn't push the limits of any ethics...

I got a software upgrade when I got the iPod retrofit. What would be symptomatic of a TCU crash or malfunction? I feel a little uncomfortable about lying to get a replacement.

Hello,
Take a look at SIB 84 23 06. May be good for a TCU replacement if you are lucky.
On the other hand, my TCU was replaced under warranty when they couldn't get the BTUM "band aid" blue tooth fix to work. I've read where others have had the same experience. After replacing the TCU, they told me I still required the BTUM for bluetooth, but I didn't. I was able to return the BTUM and associated components for a full refund.
Good luck,
Bill

Through the SIB you have two chances to get a new TCU.
1) There is an NVM problem that can only be corrected by a replacement TCU
2) They fry your TCU trying to evaluate the condition of the NVM. Stranger things have happened.
Good luck
