Gents,

I will shortly be buying a rear facing ISOFIX car seat.

If I buy a non-BMW seat, do I have to have the airbags deactivated in that part of the car? I spoke to BMW Customer Services and they told that I would have to deactivate them unless I bought a BMW child seat. Is this BS? How have you guys gone about it? Any recommendations on seats?

I am getting really confused, so any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.

BMW's response:

Thank you for your recent call to BMW Customer Information.

As discussed we can confirm that if you are fitting a non BMW car seat to the back of your vehicle we would always recommend that you have the rear side airbags deactivated. The reason that we recommend this is that BMW made car seats are specifically designed to take into consideration being deployed without interfering with the car seat. We do not test any third party car seats and therefore as a manufacturer always recommend you have the rears side airbags deactivated if not using one of our seats.

We hope this of help to you and clarifies the situation.

Yours sincerely

My car has no rear airbags precisely for this reason... it is not safe if you have infants and small kids.

The rear airbag will not deploy if there is not enough weight on the seat. Only HPS bag will deploy. Installing a child seat for an infant or a todler is perfectly safe with side airbags. Plus, if you are concernet, install it in the middle, there are 2 Isofix/Latch connectores there.

Are you sure about this? I didn't think the rear seats had sensors in them like the front passenger seat did. At least I know my 2004 doesn't, maybe later models do.

You are correct about children in a car seat not being a problem for airbags. Smaller children only become a problem when they are old enough to be out of the car seat but still too small for the impact of the airbag.

They can be deactivated at the dealer if you are concerned.

Never heard about rear seat sensors either..

..rear side airbags can be a problem for kids in child seats under certain circumstances, as stated in the manual.

I added the rear airbags as an option because of my kids (all younger than 7), but after reading this today I gave my dealer a call and they recommend that I get the rear airbags deactivated until the kids are >75 lbs. The dealer also said that he thought that cars with rear airbags were shipped with them deactivated, but he said to have the technician look at it just to be sure.
