Mine goes halfway between 5K & 6K RPM at start up (0 degrees temp outside), then gradually go up, untill they are just above the 7K RPMand stay there. They'll never fully disappear (You'll always see 4 bars).

Yes, I was wondering about that. I have driven around for a half hour already and there are still 3 hash marks. I wonder if it's because I only have 400 miles on the odometer.

The white marks never go away completely. As far as what's "normal", I think three is the correct number for the six-cylinder cars and 4 is the correct number for 8-cylinder cars...
Still, there's nothing like a temp gauge LOL

We E60 owners get only the utterly useless average fuel consumption gauge with a needle going wildly left and right, providing nothing but disinformation to the driver. By the way, the new 3er coupe has an oil temp gauge in the place where we have the fuel consumption thing...

It's hard to say for sure -- there could be more than one factor in the formula that controls the white bars on the tach.
On my car (535d), the bars are all hidden (except the last four, which never are) when coolant temp reaches 75 C (167 F). This is very consistent and has been verified several times. All the other points on the relationship are also consistent (if a little more difficult to observe). It then takes a few more miles for the coolant temp to reach steady state at 90C +/-2, which is consistent with hythe's observations on the B5.

Today my dealer told me that for the 525D LCI and higher "D" models, the white bars (above the red) doesn't work by design. These only seems to work for the 520D LCI and the 5xxi models. We have to thrust the board computer to prent us from doing harm.
