Yesterday, I got my dealership to update my April 06 build 550 to the current version software. Now when I open the front doors I hear a noise from the trunk area for about 2 seconds. Like something mechanical is kicking in. Anyone else have this? What is it?

Thanks...

It sounds like a solinoid kicking in. It might have happened when I inserted the key before, now it happens when i open the door.

Hi,

I too noticed this, spoke with BMW and it is the fuel pump.

Totally normal. The E90 does this as well when 'activated' (open a door or pressing unlock on the remote) after entering sleep mode.

Did you also notice this only after the progman update?

I never had it before.

My car has always done this, along with a little crackle (similar to the sound of popping a beer can) every time I unlock it. Then again, it was delivered with Progman 25 earlier this year, so I really have no comparison to earlier software versions. I do know these are the sound of the various systems either priming or booting in anticipation of the car being started up and run.

Yes, I noticed the same thing after getting the updated software. I think BMW engineers reconfigured the start-up seuqence so that the i-Drive appears to launch quicker.

Have you also noticed that some 'programs' seem to start-up in the background after the i-Drive is up and running? - just when you think i-Drive is fully on, there now seems to be some time when you cannot get replies to commands.

It reminds me of the Gary Sinise character in the movie Apollo 13 when he has to rebuild the start-up sequence in the command module to save on energy. I think that is what BMW engineers have done with our software.

Great analogy....This is definately the way the BMW works when the battery is running low and the car limits the remaining power to the crucial items on the spacecraft.. I mean car.

So I wonder if this is part of the reason for the poorer gas milage that some discuss. I would imagine that the early fuel pump start up when the door opens vs. the start button is to address the rough idle situation that some have experienced. Could this extra fuel be the reason for worse gas mileage that some have reported?
