Only my Angel Eyes come on during the day. When it's dark, the full headlight comes on.

If the headlights come on early, then I really don't have any problem with that. It's when they fail to light up during sunset or dawn, that bothers me. Luckly, they never fail to light up.

Xenon lights last for almost ever, so that's not an issue... so why do you need the lights off?

Because I had auto headlights on my Lexus before this BMW..... and they worked perfectly. Because that's what I'm used to (auto headlights), I now always forget to turn headlights on manually.

And because daytime running lights are gay..... and that's effectively what I have now. I live in Florida, I don't need headlights on at 3 PM.

I really don't understand BMW's on this issue. If the sensor is crap, just do a recall to replace it. They seem to have the stupid attitude of thinking the problem will go away by ignoring it.

2 things:
1) my sensor was in fact bad and has been replaced (by replacing the entire rear view mirror) and
2) the active headlights only work in the "auto" mode not if you turn the headlights manually.

That would explain it. That's the main reason why I keep control -- I want to choose the angels while it's not too dark then add the headlights when needed...

It's probably a legal thing - especially because they want to sell in the US market.

If you are going to sell a car with auto-headlights, you better make damn sure they come on when it gets even slightly dark or else someone is going to be suing you if they are in an accident and it is even remotely possible that the lights didn't come on - i.e. "I didn't notice my lights weren't on but I had them on auto so I assumed they were".

BMW would never be liable for that.

As a driver, you are responsible for the equipment on the car operating.

If you went to the dealer to get service, and they replaced your taillamps.... but didn't do it right, so they didn't operate.... and a cop pulled you over that night for no taillights... you'd get the ticket, not BMW. And good luck trying to fight that one.
