I have a 2005 530i. This morning I start my car and letting it warm up. The idling was rough then a warning shows in the i drive stating engine malfunction and something about the catalytic converter sorry it was early in the morning I don't remember the whole warning. I shut off the car and restart. Car starts fine and no rough idle. I check and there is no warnings in the i drive. Every once in a while I notice a little smoke coming out of the grill but it stops and its very sparingly. Does anyone have suggestions or has experienced this. Im pretty worried as I have just passed 50,000 miles.

Thumbs down

Sounds like it was emissions system issue. The warranty for failure of certain parts for that are longer than 4yr/50K factory warranty. Any smoke coming from engine compartment, even if only at start-up, is not normal. You should have it inspected by a BMW indy or dealer. One tip I've found very useful- Use your cellphone camera to take quick pics of iDrive warnings or car issues that pop up! Good evidence to help with diagnose issues.

BTW, smoke from grill area may be cooling system "steam" and not smoke ... inspect for small leaks as they can occur at any time. Catch them before they leave your system dry and your car overheated.

Thanks for your suggestion. It could have very well be steam since its very rare when it happens. Im not sure about the emmissions since it said something about the catalytic converter. I would think that the warning would show in the i drive again.

Could be the oxygen sensors. They become corroded/junked up over time, and can cause your engine to run rough.
