the input from the I-Drive knob to the CPU is much faster in an M5 than the 535i, you can change this of course by changing the software on the 535i.

The M knobs are machined aluminum, everything else is painted plastic. The aluminum feels different, looks better in IMO however it does get hotter and colder than the plastic knob.

If you are referring to how the knobs differ in looks only, here's a not-so-great photo on an e-Bay listing of an M5 i-drive controller. It's heavier (aluminum vs. plastic), larger, and has a machined finish. I'm not sure if the M5 knobs have changed as often as on the standard e60, which started as a satin finish all over for 04, 05, and early 06 MY, then had a leather top for the rest of 06 and 07. Then, as you know from having the LCI, they went to a rubbery material instead of leather.

I prefer the premium with leather on top knob over the M5 one. It's just plain.

I have a 2004 knob for sale and also a 1 day old "leather-top" iDrive bought yesterday at BMW dealer for $65..

I am upgrading to the m5 aluminum ones..

2004 idrive for $20 shipped
"leather-top" idrive for $45 shipped.

Both has no mark on it.. Especially for the leather-top one =)

Are there pics of the rubbery material instead of leather?.
Do you know if this type fits the '04 and up?

Thanks
