My Ride: On order for November Delivery - 550 !!!! - Currently own 1999 E39 540, sport pkg, premium sound pkg, black on black. Previous owner of 2000 M Coupe, 1996 328is, 1984 633csi, 1982 528e, and wifed owned 1999 528 touring and 2002 525 touring. Looking at buying 545 or 550 in fall of 2005.
While out with clients today my I-Drive totally died. There is absolutely no control over anything that is controlled by the I-Drive. The screen sometimes reads "BMW" and other times while driving goes black. Nice. Couldn't have happened at a worse time as I was counting on the NAV to get us to most of the 6 houses we had to see today. Instead, we limped along with a map book. Going to the dealer in the morning. I had no idea how addicted/dependent to the NAV I am (and the bluetooth). I read a post here of someone who had the same problem and a re-install fixed it. Anyone else have this happen to them?

Did you try to reboot (press mute, CD eject & DVD eject simultaneously for a few seconds until it turns back on)?

Haven't tried this. But it's worth a shot.

Yeah, mine has done it in the past. It takes forever to boot up sometimes. Maybe because you were in and out of the car all day, it wasn't enough time to shut down and boot up. (But that's no excuse!) Ejecting the dvd has worked as well. Goog thing you had a map! It would be kind of embarrassing not to know where your next house is!

You probably need to have your CCC replaced. This is exactly what happened to me a few weeks ago. It was replaced in a one day and I got a software update at the same time. If you do not currently have MP3 support, be sure to ask them to enable it during the software update. There are other threads on this topic here. Use SEARCH on CCC to get the details.

What GWF said.
Same happened to me. Major inconvenience to have no electronic conveniences that are such a part of I Drive.
