My Ride: 2006 Titanium Silver 550i, with all the bells and whistles!!
Default

So, installed an iPod interface last night and everything works tickety boo. However, in order to scroll past the first 5 or 6 playlists or bands, I have to force the idrive wheel. the wheel clicks for the first few then stop....if I turn if farther it continues to scroll but I get the force feedback. Just wondering if this is normal, or is it going to cause the idrive controller to wear out prematurely? My artist and playlist are less than the 255 max.

any feedback (no pun in 10 did)

What is being shown on the screen should have nothing to do with an iDrive knob that is sticking or requiring extra force to activate a menu. Maybe I don't understand what your saying. My '08 535i iDrive wheel turns infinitely...there is no stop...and it has clicks when it is turned. I'm not sure how the '06 iDrive is, maybe different.

That is normal and probably why the force feedback was removed on the LCI cars.

This is normal, it's the same with the Dension interface.
It's just the interface failing to deliver it's info on time, so it stutters for a splitsecond.

The newer iDrive interface doesn't have force feedback, so it's normal for Allen not to feel anything

Instead of forcing it, what happens if you wait a short time to let the processor catch up? In other words, does the controller get easy to turn again if you pause a few seconds?

That's how I remember it working with my pre-LCI car (that had the haptic feedback on the controller.)

I can answer that, as i have a Dension
No, seems that the CCC gets it's information when it needs it (e.g. when you turn the button to look at the next track).
That takes too long and the force feedback briefly kicks in (as if you were at the bottom of the list) until it gets it's info and lets the feedback "go".

The reason the force feedback was removed in LCI cars, was that the controller took too much CPU power (about 50% to just apply feedback).
Instead of writing proper feedback code or replacing the CPU with a faster one, they just removed the entire function... (Laziness on BMW's part?)

I get the haptic feedback when I'm scrolling down through a list of tracks on an MP3 CD too. It's quite annoying if you're listening to track 3 and want to scroll to track 165 (like I did today).

I agree the feedback is quite annoying. Whenever using my address book to dial the phone its problematic as its a pain to scroll through the list with it constantly pushing back. It would be a great feature to make the feedback a user configurable option.

iv got the shaking idrive wheel as well

its not breaking it, its just the stepper motor moving on its own to create that nice shaking effect, wont hurt it

i once turned the idrive wheel waay past its stop (elastic point) about 3000degrees more LOL let it go and it just span on its own for 30sec hehe
