Can the HUD be minimized and or moved so that it is
not directly in the field of view? For example, I would
like the lower left hand corner of the front window...

No. It can however be moved very slightly along the vertical axis (up or down).

Has to be done by the dealer.
If you do a search, you will see that someone has posted a technical document explaining the procedure (sorry don't have it with me).
I find the position of the HUD to be very good. Centered appeals to me better than having to shift my eyes off center to the left if it were in the lower left of the windshield. If I could change the location at all, maybe a bit higher. I had the dealer max it out last trip in.

If BMW let you select what was getting displayed, I would have gotten it. I have an SMG car and one benefit of a traditional manual is that you know what gear your in by where the stick shifter is positioned, I would like gear, tach and speed displayed.
I'm actually surprized to read that the image is in your line of vision. Mine is so low that I have to look down to see it. I did ask my dealer to adjust it higher but was told it can only be moved up a mill or two (only for fine adjustments not really for positioning on the window).
I still love it, just wish it was higher.

It is not in your usual line of view, it is below that.
ln other words if you apply a normal/good following distance, the display will not overlap with the car ahead (where you would normally be looking), but slightly below that. i.e. the background to HUD should always be the road surface.

Everyone should do this anyway.
It is safer, and it prevents rock chips on your hood.
