I love the HUD as well - very safe while following the nav instructions and correllating the info on the road. Speed indication is pretty useful as well, a gentle reminder how fast the numbers can pile up...
Too bloody true. It should be compulsory on all powerful cars. Then again compared to the cars of 20 years ago the 520d is a powerful car.....solution ......put it on every model !

Test drives and the threads like this with all the praise for HUD have put it into the 'must' column on my shopping list for a used E60, but I can't help thinking that the HUD speedo will give less of a benefit over time for me.

I was thinking about how much I've become accustomed to my current car and how rarely I look at the speedo anymore since I can estimate my speed very well from my gear choice, throttle input, engine tone and the environment around me. On car that's new to me I can see the HUD speed display be highly beneficial but it seems to me I can get along just fine without it after a few weeks getting to know the car. Has anybody found this to be true?

Being able to see the speed projected on the windshield is wonderful, but it is even more wonderful to get the NAV information projected on the windshield.

In your enviroment and from a speed standpoint, this may be true - but don't you think the added safety of following nav instructions is useful ?

I guess you have to use this feature to appreciate it - if you drive in very familiar territory all the time, I agree, you will probably be fine without it !

I recently did a 3,000 mile, 7-country road trip over 3 weeks using Nav without HUD.

With arrow view in the assistance window and voice directions switched on, there is absolutely NO problem.

Except that I always have my (annoying) voice directions shut off. Don't really need them with HUD...

I initally put HUD in my "must have" column. When I considered that I would only use Nav directions occasionally as I rarely go places I might need it, and weighed it against the increased cost for 2008, I decided to spend my money elsewhere. It's a great feature, but having it to primarily display my speed seemed an overly expensive luxury. I'll rely on the arrow directions on the normal display when I need it.

That's another great thing about HUD - not having to hear that bloody woman talk.
The problem with HUD is that once you get used to it ,you wont want another car without it.

( can you imagine buying a car without power steering or a/c.?..well thats how I feel about HUD)

Iv'e never had this feature but am considering it onmy next BMW, I would love to hear from you guys. How valuable is this feature? Is it distracting at all or would you consider it a saftey feature?
I wish that I had ordered it. The "40 something eyes " need all the help they can get . Should be a standard feature on future vehicles.

Cheers
