I found it interesting that MB has their website set up so you can search models by horsepower and 0-60 elapsed times.

If you care to do so Copy and Paste This into your browser:

This is a full out performance effort by Mercedes Benz. I wish them luck because it raises the bar for everyone and we are the beneficiaries.

And make some of their cars... (Like the E-class) less ugly.

In my opinion, no matter what, MB is the snobby old man's BMW. Just my opinion (exept the Mclaren)

I must give MB a pat on the back for 'raising the bar'...When you have a luxury car maker putting out cars with better performance #'s than the dedicated sports car manufacturers(are you listening, Porsche?), it will make a more competitive environment amongst all the car companies, thus benefitting us all...

Now if only MB can just make a better handling car and a car that communicates with the driver...Until then, I'm sticking with BMW...

What was that old saying? "A BMW is meant to be driven, and a Mercedes is meant to be driven in..."

Seems to me that Mercedes is searching for its "marketing and sales" soul now since the BMW group has outsold Mercedes in the US since 2001.

Of course, the most obvious knee-jerk reaction is to "match" what you perceive to be missing as compared to the market leader -- in this case, Mercedes determined that it had to increase hp to meet/exceed comparable BMW models (and it is in the process of doing so across the board). However, as has been noted by several responses to this thread, hp alone does not make the car a BMW and Mercedes has a long way to go in improving driving performance (in the twisties, etc.).

Alas, no one has yet mentioned the very poor reliability of Mercedes currently -- among the top sellers, both the E class and M class have the worst reliability among all competitors. My neighbor got rid of his E class in favor of Lexus because it was in the shop every other week (and he was stuck driving various loaners) for a wide variety of problems -- he has sworn never to buy another Mercedes based on this very bad experience with the E class. Unless Mercedes significantly improves its reliability, sales will continue to fall as prospective buyers find better alternatives for their $50K or so.
