I am looking into replacing my European license plate holder and I have been looking for information on how to safely remove the license plate holder on my E60. It has been hard to find information thus far but from what I have picked up you need to take a screw driver and sorta force out the license plate from the actual holder. Then you can remove the holder as it is connected to the trunk via 2 screws. I plan on trying this out tomorrow but just wanted to check in if anyone has done this before. I ask mainly because I don't like the idea of a screw driver and the usage of "force" near the car.

Thanks

I did this when I shipped my car from Europe back to the States. You have it right - just gently pry one side of the license out of the holder, then it should slide right out. Use a short blade type screwdriver for better control. Once the license plate is out of the way you will see the screws that connect the holder to the trunk.

This depends on what kind of license plate holder you got. There's a few versions out there.

On this kind you have to remove the small holder things you can barely see at the bottom of the license plate. There are four of these on the lower part and four on the upper part, you only need to remove top or bottom.

On other versions either the bottom or top of the frame have hinges, so you can open up the frame and simply take out the license plate.

Here's an example of these, the part between the two lines on each end at the bottom can be opened.

Thanks for the detailed information. I appreciate it. I haven't had the time to get it out yet but will get to it later tonight.
