In my old 528, I could charge my cell phone with the ignition off but in my new 530 the 12v outlet goes dead when the ignition is off. Fine for safety or battery life but not convenient for me.
Second, same for the rear view mirror mounted garage door opener. This means you have to start closing the door before turning off the engine. Or start the engine before opening the door. Cough cough cough
Any techies have a fix?

The answer to the garage opener is easy. Simply insert the key fob, press the start button (without your foot on the brake) and you can then operate the garage door opener.

For garage door opener, you wouldn't expect bugglar break into your car and open your garage door w/o key, would you? This can be done by replacing power wire of your review mirror with the one power dome light, but power will go off when car enter sleep mode to reduce power consumption.

I never understood that between BMW and Lexus... Lexus is soooooo "Safety" concious about everything especially not letting the drivers or passengers play with anything in the NAV yet they run power to the Universal Garage Door openner on the rear view mirror... For me I prefer that... I like being able to open and close garages and gates with the power off and am not worried about someone breaking into the car to open the garage as its not attached to the house.

For your phone charger, use power that charge your flash light in glove box. It'll stay on even no key in ignition.

You said to disconnect the ignition power from the mirror and then connect the constant power from the overhead courtesy light to the mirror. Are all the terminals to do this located in the overhead panel?
Thanks
