(all price in Canadian dollars)

My dealer initially said it can't be done on my 2004 545i, then I told him another dealer can do it. Then now he said it's $120 for the cable and 2-3 hrs labor charge, so altogether, it will be about $500. Does this sound right? Base on my research, the installation is not simple but it's not hard either. The only thing we can't do ourselves is the programing to get iDrive to recognize the input. Is this true? How many hours of labor should it take?

If you are in the Toronto area and have had this installed by your dealer, can you please let me know how much you were charged for it. I would greatly appreciate it. If you can refer me to someone knowledgeable, that would be ideal.

I paid $279.57 for parts & labor for the AUX Port at BMW of Oyster Bay in Long Island New York. Not a bad price, I did go to some other dealers and received estimate price of about $350.00 installed.

FM transmitter quality is REALLY bad... better off not having it.

Thats way too much... I had one installed recently and the dealer charged me $80 for the cable and $120 (1hr labor) to install it.

You can find the cable on ebay for about $65 bucks. If you are mechanically inclined, you can install the cable yourself, it isn't very difficult. Then you would just take the car to the dealer and have them reprogram the idrive to see the added AUX port.

I suppose I have to go to a Canadian dealer to have iDrive reprogram since I have a Canadian car? I am driving down to Philly next week and will surely pass by a few BMW dealers

I just had it done last week at the San Francisco BMW and yes, it did cost me about $320USD. They did have to update my software in my '04 530i to recognize it. My friend had someone outfit his for $80 but his was a '02 530i w/o the iDrive. iDrive is starting to sound like iCost.

When they install the cable, and do the programming for iDrive, do they have to isntall the most recent PROGMAN?

The short answer is no. The installation of the cable is the hardware portion of the install. The software work is simply to tell the car that AUX In is now installed in the vehicle and to activate the portion of the software to enable playback through the AUX In. Unless there is a problem with the software controlling a portion of the entertainment system, it will not be updated.

Matt, PROGMAN is not a global program as in your PC. DIfferent "modules" in the car may be at different software levels. For example, TCU software may be at version 22 while the software controlling the light module may be at version 25. This may have been structured this way as each module can be updated a finite number of times (12 or 13 IIRC). A new release of PROGMAN may only update 1 or 2 modules in the car and may not affect every module.
