So think I mentioned on another thread but cannot find it but anyways in short-

Was cruising on i-10 palmsprings and hit 150 a few times. Played around with a nice red sl500 vert-not the newest variety but one version older. and first time I blew by him in left lane at 140ish and he was going 100ish and wasnt trying to race him or anything just happened to pass him.

Well next chance I get to push the car-I was trying see how fast I could get it-and I was flooring it and climbing up-and about 130ish I looked in my rear view and there comes the red sl500 coming up so I know he is wanting to play around.

I politely move into the right lane-which both are completely clear so he can have his nice open straightaway.

I was thinking we would have a nice little side by sun run at 150-160ish but no sir- when I hit about 150 he just blows by me and must have reached 170ish before we had to shut down.

I mean sheeit-what speed or power would a guy have to have to actually catch up and blow by you at 150? that is pretty damn fast-my foot was still on the pedal mashed too-not like I was cruising steady at 150-I was still accelerating right at the through the 150 mark

By the way-so I dont do not have to start another thread-

Each time I pushed the car-I got this really loud whining noise that would not go away until I let off gas- but the wierd thing was

-hit 140-and RIGHT at 140 loud whine sound-so I let off
-again hit 140-no sound so kept going-hit 150 and louddd whine sound so stopped
-third time I hit 150 and no sound at all-never made it much past but definetly no whine

What the heck was this?? My engine telling me to slow down or what?

Are you talking miles or kilometers? 150 do not seem realisting in a 530?

He's talking MPH in a 530? Ummm. Sleepy, I think you may have a miscalibrated speedo, my firend. Not a chance.

As far as your question about the SL500, it really depends on the year. A 2007 has about 390 (if memory serves); an 02 has about 300; and going even further back.....you get the idea. So it really "depends". Sure you didn't get smoked by an SL55?

huh? an 07 530? I have hit over 150 numerous times. Maybe that is the loud whining sound I heard at 140 and 150-are the 530s not meant to go that fast? They list topspeed as electronically limited to 150-and I have the evotech software topspeed removal-anyway yes 150mph and I am not getting why one cant do that in a 530?

Anyway wow only mid 300 hp walked me at 150-that is a sad day

He has at least 50 BHP advantage on you (you have 258) with a tq advantage of well over 100 ft/lb. Don't feel bad, Sleepy. Different class of vehicle. (based on 2002 MY SL) But again, you sure it was a 500 and not a 600 or 55?

On top speed. I re-read the post. I was under the inpression YOU hit 170, not him. My apologies for doubting your fast-ness.

The loud whistle is a windshield defect. You are lucky it only happens over 140mph. Live with it and don't try and get it fixed. Mine happened at 120mph and I had it fixed in Rome and then again in Socal. There has always been wind noise since. I guess a factory seal with a defect is better than service center seal with no defect.

really? But it went away the second time I hit each speed-definetly didnt sound like windshield noise and like I said it did not happen the second time I hit each higher speed-sounded more like engine whine or some sort-but I likely will not be at those speeds again.

Search the forum for winshield defect and someone posted a video of the sound. You can verify.
