not completely died just certain features
first time i was not able to change the volume using the turning control, and the change track buttons just would not work
had to turn car off for 5min
second time it went wrong half way through a bluetooth call totally killing music, would not allow me to select a audio source
again had to turn car off for 5min
only had car month and half LOL

Mine dies every 2-3 months. It reboots itself after about 15 minutes of driving but if I could reboot manually that would be better.

You can force a reboot of the iDrive (stereo, nav, etc) by pressing and holding the eject buttons for both the CD and the DVD/nav drive and then pressing in the volume control (like you're putting it on mute). The system will then reboot. Just like a PC - three finger salute.
Your passenger can do this while driving (the driver shouldn't do this kind of stuff while driving) as it doesn't reboot the entire car. So your car doesn't suddently stop and then restart itself. Wouldn't that be exciting ?
Cheers
