Which light? The outside (bigger reflector) or the inside (smaller reflector)?
If the inside are lit up during the day its DRL
The AUTO setting will lit up the outside when gettin' dark.

When it gets dark enough the 'auto setting' on the headlight switch will turn on both the full headlight system as well as the rear tail lights. If its on, then there is a green light beside the switch that lights up. The sensor is in the windshield side of the rear view mirror.
Mine have sometimes come on during bright sunlight but usually when it is low in the sky. Dirt and snow can trick the sensor into turning on. A long tunnel or shady street can also cause them to turn on. If it bothers you then use the lights in manual mode skipping the 'auto setting'.

If you point your headlights at a wall or any flat surface and turn your steering wheel you can actually see your headlights move in the direction that your turning. The funny thing with my car 2004 545i is that the lights only go to the right. I believe my driverside headlight was replaced with a non adaptive head light. However they are both Xenon (about 6000k HID) with white angel eyes.
