I understand that BMW engineers designed their engines to run a higher temps for specific reasons, but I find it odd that they would choose to do so with blocks and cylinder heads made from aluminum and magnesium - which are less tolerant to overheating than iron.

Now I have a better understanding of why these engines need to be replaced when they suffer from overheating - their heat limits are being pushed to begin with.

Often the engineers do things for reasons other then the longevity of the car. Are these not the same engineers that say the tranny fluid and coolant are "lifetime" and never need to be changed?
All things equal, a engine running at 195 will outlast one running at 210. Back in the day, when emissions were not the primary concern and engine longevity was, 180 degrees was the standard.

I could probably agree with this: All things equal, an engine designed to run optimally at 195 will outlast one designed to run optimally at 210.

No idea if this is true: All things equal, an engine designed to run optimally at 210 but then ran at 195 will outlast one designed to run optimally at 210 and ran at 210.

I believed "designed" is actually not the correct word. I think the correct term is "forced", for emissions reasons.
