Hello everyone, I bought it on 24/08/06, and ofcourse it was sold to me as a 2006.
Information on drivers door pillar shows a 06/05 as built date.
It does not have the START/STOP button, or the extra wood trim, more important
than that, how could I find out if it really has the new '06/255 HP engine?

Thanks for any information.

E60 (525i / 530i) built after March 2005 are Model Year 2006. Your car MY 2006 has the new engine 255 HP, but only post Sept 2005 production cars have Start / Stop button.

You can also enter your VIN at http://carfax.com/

The bottom line is that BMWNA decided to market certain vehicles earlier in 2005 as 2006 models before essentially the rest of the world (and the factory) switched to the new model year, which BMW does in September. This means that yes, your car is a "real" 2006, but it won't have some features that you'll hear billed as "new for 2006" in the rest of the world (such as Start/Stop button) because that only began in September production for US 2006 models. BMWNA's main motivation for doing the "2006" model year definition early was because of the new engine, which it felt more important for the US marketplace. They really should have done a 2005 1/2 or something like that, but BMWNA felt it important enough to bill it as a "2006".

No, he means the US 2006 525i actually has a de-tuned 3.0L 6 cyl engine (not a 2.5L) with 215hp, as opposed to the 255hp 3.0L 6 cyl in the US 530i. See this url for details.

If it's a 2006 he just ordered, it will have the 3.0L engine, and I'm guessing Carfax's database isn't 100% up-to-date.

If your engine looks like this then its the 255hp one.

It depends what you mean by "real 2006". BMW NA started calling the 6 cylinder models produced after week 9 of 2005 (March) as 2006 models. BMW NA always does this if a new or updated car comes out early in the year. I guess they worry about people who bought 2005 models complaining because 3 months into the year they change a major thing like the engine and still call it a 2005. They try to get away with it by calling it the next year's model. So, in the US your car is officially considered a 2006 model, even though it really is not. The "true" start date for the next model year for BMW is always September. If there are any changes that are supposed to be implemented on start of production on next years model then it occurs starting September production. So a "real" 2006 model would be those cars that were built starting in September 2005. This means that a change like the pushbutton start (which was supposed to start on 2006 models) will not be on the pseudo-2006 (pre-Sep. production) US 6 cylinders,.....................but again, in the US you can legally refer to your car as a 2006 model.
