Last week, I get a message on the display saying that the engine oil is sub minimum and that I should add at least 1qt of approved BMW oil. So I put 1 qt of Castrol full synthetic oil and now it's saying that it's full! I actually scheduled an appointment to have it seen at my BMW dealership for this and a bunch of other things but I'm thinking of rescheduling because I have a bunch of other things to do.

Definitely not as accurate as a dipstick - but if not low after adding 1qt of oil I'd leave alone until its time for an oil change.

I had the same message, and took it to the dealer, who said it was fine and there were no error messages indicating low oil.The next day it came on again so I added a quart of Mobil One Synthetic. The reading now says full and has been fine for the last month.Frustrating when you cannot check it manually!

It might be an issue with the sensor. I too wish it had a dipstick.

I have recently acquired a 06 525XI and decided to visit my local BMW dealership.

I'm told the Beamer passes oil through the engine and this is normal.

I'm told that the system tells you when your down ONE quart and you should then add ONE entire quart. The 525 is designed to do this.

You can of course check the electronic Idrive screen which displays the sum and providess a visual view of the capacity. Don't know if I really trust that yet.
