How can I stop the chimes ("bong bong BONG") that goes off on each hour? It's pretty distracting. It doesn't even happen as the clock turns to the next hour either! After the bongs it stays on 59mins!

Any ideas?!

Oh man, I just saw that setting yesterday in the iDrive but I can't remember offhand exactly where it was. It was on that menu selection that deals with the Time and Date. Go to the Time screen and it was one of the checkboxes at the bottom.

The reason it's making the sound at XX:59 is so that you still have 1 minute to switch on the radio to listen to the news.
It can easily be disabled in idrive (vehicle settings/time&date).

It used to say that in the owner's manual, namely that this was to alert the driver to the top of the hour so he could switch to the news. Newer manuals don't seem to include this explanation. I happen to like the feature. If nothing else, it's fun when passengers say "what's that beep?"

Just remove the tick on the HOUR MEMO in date/time settings

I'm in agreement with Vishwen, just the remove the check mark from the hour memo. I happen to like it , only wish I could make it another sound instead of the default one.
