BMW AG will team up with joint venture partner Brilliance China Automotive Holdings Ltd. to develop an electric vehicle specifically for China, a Chinese newspaper reported.

The EV will be built on the platform of the BMW 5-series. Its concept model will be displayed at an auto show in China sometime this year, according to the Beijing-based Beijing Youth Daily daily newspaper.

Further details about the EV are not available and BMW were unable to comment when contacted by Automotive News Europe.

BMW Brilliance Automotive Co., a 50:50 joint venture between BMW and Brilliance, currently builds the BMW 3-Series and 5-series sedans in the northeast China city of Shenyang.

In 2010, the BMW Group sold 169,000 BMW and Mini vehicles in China, a surge of 87 percent year-on-year.

In 2011, the group will introduce at least three new models into China through imports - the new BMW x3, the new BMW 6-series and the Mini Countryman, the newspaper said.
