There is a good reason why MB consistently ranks at the bottom of most current reliability surveys. Unfortunately, the OP experienced it first hand. Not that BMWs are the most reliable of cars (they are not) but they do tend to score higher than MB on reliability. Just the other day, a spanking brand new jet black S550 with AMG package died on the ramp of my building's parking garage. Something to do withe the tranny.

It will go back and forth. You will get bad apple from every make and BMW does have it's fair share.

The reliability surveys are showing that MB has largely addressed the problems of the recent past. They're outscoring BMW by a wide margin... MB placed 3rd on the 2010 Initial Quality ranking and placed 9th in the 2010 Vehicle Dependability Study. BMW scored below the industry average in both, unfortunately scoring well below the industry average in the 2010 Vehicle Dependability Study.

You are correct. Quite a role reversal from the 2008 Vehicle Dependability Survery when BMW was above the industry average and MB was below. I can't help but wonder how much of the plummeting BMW score is attributable to the N54 High Pressure Fuel Pump issue.
