Can I presume you did the swirl flaps yourself ??

Its possible you never seated one of the rubber sealing rings properly when you refitted the inlet manifold ? and its only just starting to let go ?

Just a guess mate.....or a loose stud maybe from when you did the same job, do you use thread lock on those things ??
Yes - did the flaps myself approx 4000 miles ago and its been fine until last night. Correct me if i'm wrong but if one of the seals had gone would that not just cause a leak in the air intake system .. how would fuel be pushed back through this?

I dont know, im not a mechanic

But one would assume that the intake manifold has to interact with the fuel at some point, else it would not work eh

Im guessing there was a rubber sealing ring on each port ?, bearing in mind the fuel is delivered under extreme pressure its not beyond the realms of possibility in my mind at least that fuel could somehow make it way past a dis-lodged seal maybe ? Makes sense in "theory" to me at least.

Perhaps it's NOT diesel....could be that Bean Burrito with extra cheese you ate earlier in the day!

Yes - All sorted.

There was a minor leak from Cylinder no.1 injection pipe fixing at the high pressure rail end. Mechanic tightened it a little and all sorted.

He was a little surprised as to how it worked loose.. no work has been carried out in this area so a bit of a mystery. He managed to get a spanner onto cylinder 2 fixing too which he also nipped up a little. My advice to anyone who has there manifold off is to check all fixings are nice and tight.

Thanks for all the suggestions..!
