After a bad week with everything going wrong, I was driving home this evening and whilst coming off the motorway a heavy waft of diesel smell came into the cabin. As I was close to home I carried on for a couple of miles with the windows down for fresh air. There were no errors and no loss of power just a nasty smell of diesel.

Having removed the engine cover there was a little smoke from the top of the inlet manifold - diesel mist it appears.

The area around a couple of the recessed manifold bolts next to the injector rail was wet so I dabbed a tissue on it and it was clear so definately not oil.

I gave it a good clean and started the engine again but could not see any fresh diesel deposits so I guess it must have come out under high load pressure from somewhere??

Any ideas of likely possibilities??

I'll leave the car at home tomorrow as I dont want to risk any further damage.

530d M Sport 2004 - Swirlflaps Removed...

Thanks Guys

My strong guess is a cracked exhaust manifold. Here's a great thread about it!
Maybe worth to check it out. Good luck with the issue!

Thanks Anzafin.. but how would a cracked exhaust manifold cause diesel to be on the inlet manifold???

Hmmm... Check your air tubes; EGR, turbo....

edit: Or do you mean that you spotted actually diesel splashes (the fuel) on your intake manifold? Sorry it's my English...

Yes - Actual diesel fuel around the studs of the manifold near the injector rail.. just cant see where its coming from??

Can I presume you did the swirl flaps yourself ??

Its possible you never seated one of the rubber sealing rings properly when you refitted the inlet manifold ? and its only just starting to let go ?

Just a guess mate.....or a loose stud maybe from when you did the same job, do you use thread lock on those things ??
