Default Help Needed - 2009 520d Touring Buying Guide

Hi all, I'm new to the forum but have been browsing for tips on common issues to look for on the 520d. I'm thinking of buying a 2009 520d M Sport touring with approx 120k miles on the clock and I'm wary of any expensive issues which can crop up, Currently driving a Passat which I've finally lost patience with due to the amount of very expensive, common issues its developed in the last two years.

Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for over and above the obvious? From the limited research I've done it seems there can be problems with the tailgate electrics and swirl flaps however it seems the newer engine doesn't have these fitted? What I am worried about is the number of these cars which seem to have had new clutches and turbos fitted. Is that very likely to be an issue on 2009 120k mile car, are those parts on the 520d prone to failure more than your average 120k mile car?

Thanks in advance, hope to be back in a BMW soon

I recently bought a 2009 520d m sport business edition, even after reading lots of horror story's on various forums including swirl flaps, obd placement thefts, timing chain snapping etc.....

I ended up taking the plunge regardless as it was really what I wanted and thought to myself the only story's you read about on the forums are when things go wrong. There must be thousands of people who are problem free in their beloved BMW's.

Your reason for change was the same as mine, a problematic A4 costing too much in repairs.

Take the plunge mate as long as your choice has a regular service history.

Hi. You shouldn't have swirl flaps (but can check on realoem) my 2007my 525d e61 doesn't but has had to have rear tailgate glass switch replaced along with steering column (lock sensor broke) and rear suspension compressor fortunately under warranty. Your car has done quite a lot of miles so will be due a dpf soon if not already done, and it ain't cheap either. Dunno about clutches as mine auto but turbos do go.
