If it is just the fob not working you can get it repaired for $50 and pair it back to the car. I had one done 4 months ago and havent had one issue

carefully crack it open, unsolder or carefully pry the battery from the prongs, get the appopriate battery and put back in. No need to solder. super glue it and put some permentex rv silicone sealant around it. It will start the car but if the fob is not working it will need to get reprogrammed and you. In the E60 it's a bit different with CAS than the EWS. If it was EWS I'd show you how but that ability has been taken away with CAS module.
It's very simple and will cost you little maybe around $30 or so. Find an independent shop to program the fob because the dealer with swear up and down it's not possible and try to sell you a key for $300 or so. I''ve seen it a lot. I was in the dealer about 2 months ago and a lady had an E39 and all she needed to do was pair the key and the dealer gave her incorrect instructions and I had to correct them on the spot or the poor woman would have been out more than $300 and have an unworking key. I don't know how much they cost so I'm using $300 as an example..I know she paid about $300 though. BMW doesn't have to expensive BMW makes it expensive. All about the name. Good luck.
