42.2 mpg LOL

I average 27.7 on mixed driving in a 530D, and I most certainly do not give it much stick. I would be VERY surprised if I got more then 20mpg out of a 530i, probably less. I do close on 18,000 miles per year and the residuals of the diesel are much peter than the petrol.

Premium Diesel her is 99.9 p/l, premium unleaded 93p/l in Wiltshire.

Irrespective of the sums, the sheer grunt of the diesel through the rev range makes it a far less demanding car to drive than the 530i. whilst the petrol is a little more refined evry chioce is a compromise and the petrol just does not have the grunt for me at mid-range.
Keith, you mention your *very low* mpg quite often, but I really don't think it's indicitive.

I get 35mpg from my 530d auto, and most owners when polled report the 33-35 range from a fully run-in engine.

I would have a look at the OBC re-calibration thread, measure your mpg from brimming the tank and look to see if it needs twiddling with.

In the process of doing so at the moment.

1st tank over 345 miles gave 30.3mpg whilst OBC showed 27.7.

I want to get some cumulative totals for about 1000 miles befire I get it messed with.

Interestingly, when the car was new I was getting 30mpg on the OBC. (Possibly 33 in the real world?)

I am wondering of the change to much softer Goodyear tyres from the Bridgestone RFT's has resulted in worse fuel consumption. The harder RFT's are likely to have had a much lower rolling resistance than the sticky GS D3's.

Well almost:

http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fuel/

Average UK price at the moment is 94.1 p a litre or ?4.28 a gallon for standard deisel (it actually COSTS just 29p a litre with the rest being profit and tax).

I had to full up at a motorway service station yesterday and bought the premium deisel at 1.01 a litre or ?4.59 a gallon.

I believe US gallons are different - as are US fuel prices, which is why you haven't got BMW diesels

No BMW diesels in US because of emissions. Currently pay about $2.40 per gallon for diesel for my truck, and about the same as the premium gas for the 545i (That would be about ?1.37 (0.57 exchange rate) per US gallon ). Standard gas is around $2.05 per gallon around me. Actually get about 17 mpg from my diesel truck and 21 mpg from my 545i. Would think that 530i would be better than 21 mpg. Again these are American units of measurement. Prices vary greatly depending upon location though.
